The Spot: A Hidden Gem

Amid a fast-food culture and curbside greasy spoons stands, The Spot, a local restaurant advocates for the farm-to-table movement, by serving dishes made from fresh, locally produced organic ingredients. Co-owners Chef Jonathan Sands and Erin McGee pride themselves on making their menu items from scratch each day.

Located in a strip mall along Tilton Road in Northfield, The Spot is a small restaurant featuring fresh, wholesome food with big flavor. It offers delicious and creative veggie, vegan, gluten-free dishes in a comfortable space lined with comfortable repurposed wooden furniture.

It took my dining partner and me quite a bit of time to finally choose what we wanted to eat from their impressive menu. While we decided, I sipped on some homemade watermelon lemonade, which was incredibly tasty and refreshing. My dining partner opted for some homemade kombucha, which, according to him, gives you incredible energy. Homemade elixirs and lemonades change with their specials menu each month. We finally decided on the “Feel Good” yummy quinoa salad on a bed of deconstructed guacamole served with corn chips. Ask for more corn chips with this, you’ll be scraping every bite off the plate.

The Spot puts a big focus on community and relationships. The company as a whole, supports the Atlantic County SPCA, a local animal shelter that depends on donations to help animals that have been abused or neglected. Each time a patron orders the “Dog Bed” Sands and McGee donates one dollar toward the purchase of dog beds for the shelter. I’m an animal lover so our next menu item decision was a no brainer. The Dog Bed is a wrap stuffed with grilled tofu, carrots, red onion, red cabbage, pickled veggies, and jasmine rice and topped with a kombucha vinaigrette.

If you are skeptical and think organic food can’t taste as good as the meals that you may be used to, talk to longtime patron Dr. Sarnoff, who says, “ “It’s the only place in the area of its kind. Normally you would have to be in a strong populous city like Philly. We have a big-city gem in a small town. It’s like a party in your mouth, but healthy.”

What I really love is that The Spot’s food is not strictly vegan or vegetarian.  I am a meat-eater, but I still like to eat healthy, whenever I can. The Spot has that covered with some delicious meat-based meals.

The customer service is superior, the staff is like family, the ambiance is inviting, and the food is ethereal. You’ll leave this organic restaurant feeling great and may want to come back for more feel-good fast food.
