Oh Christmas Tree Farms

Oh Christmas Tree Farms

By Doris Perkins

As Thanksgiving and Black Friday approach, local Christmas Tree farms have been busy for about 6 months, trimming the trees, tagging, and cutting the grass around the trees in preparation for the excitement of their holiday customers.

That fragrant aroma of a fresh tree. How alluring it is to many local families, it’s something that only a real tree can provide. There are several local varieties of Christmas trees that are excellent if you for a are looking particular fragrance. The Norway Spruce although not long lasting, provides a nice aroma. The Douglas Fir is a nice sweet-smelling choice. The Concolor Fir has a sweet citrus like smell, that is resistant to bugs!  If you like a lot of fragrance, the Canaan Fir is the most fragrant of all of the varieties, boasting a nice Balsam scent.

Maybe you would love a nice fresh tree and don’t prefer a very noticeable tree smell?  Don’t worry!  There are three local varieties that will work for you also!  You could try a White Pine, they not only hold their needles well, but are less aromatic than Fir varieties. The Blue Spruce, with its beautiful bluish needles, has minimal fragrance. The Leyland Cypress, another great choice, is one of the most popular holiday trees in the Northeast. It does not produce sap, and only has a tiny bit of aroma.

Rich Lanza, of one local 20-acre tree farm in Hammonton, says they found themselves unable to compete with the local box stores. To keep Lanza Tree Farm competitive, they now price their trees at 25.00 for all sizes.  Not only will they welcome your family, but will dig up your tree choice, bundle it in burlap and encourage you to plant it after the holiday is over, so that you can enjoy it for years to come!  I mean after all your hard work and choices, why not get your family a gift that keeps on giving?

A real tree has a different allure for each person.  Many want a traditional family experience, and great photo opportunities. Some are looking forward to the long walks, while drinking their favorite hot beverage.  Others are looking for a certain tree height or branch size to fit in their homes. Whatever you decide to go with, or whatever farm you choose, make sure you dress warm and measure your space first before you go.
